In this episode I hosted my good friend Paul Stringfellow. (Twitter @TechStringy) a Technical Director of a long established UK based  IT consultancy,  Gardner Systems plc. Michael and Paul talk about the topical threat of Ransomware and the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) You can find the recording here. We covered a very topical subject here in the UK regarding GDPR and how come next summer every business is going to have to adhere to these new regulations or face some heavy fines. This Knowledge Base article has been updated so much. https://kb.vmware.com/kb/1001805 But I wanted to share something with you guys that slipped through the net in my home lab. I recently created a new Windows 2016 template for my lab for ease of distribution, normal process and easy process to get one of these created. Once created I started deploying some new boxes around the lab to start the transition away from Windows 2012 R2 and onto the new shiny 2016 boxes. It wasn’t until a week or so later after all backup jobs had been configured and working that I thought the throughput was lookingRead More →

Hello again and from a new home, over the past few weeks as well as being busy with work I have changed my hosting service for vZilla.co.uk to a new one, I also transitioned away from Weebly and over to the fans favourite WordPress. All in all, it was quite an easy transition and it’s not like any downtime was going to cause me any loss in revenue. The hardest part was the migration of all my posts, I sat and went through all posts and dwindled that down to 71 in total that were worthy of being copied over. It was a manual taskRead More →

Back in September 2015 I wrote a specific blog post around leveraging the Cisco C class range as an amazing scalable backup repository and management server for Veeam.  In particular it was at this time that the Cisco C3260 was released. Yesterday the S3260 was announced (1st November), and whilst everything is still true in the S3260 and what I said regarding the C3260 in my post there is a little more. I wanted to share the additional features that make this an even more great reason to consider these as an awesome Veeam Backup Appliance. For reference here is my original post outliningRead More →

Back in March 2016, fast approaching the 1 year ago mark, Cisco announced their journey into the HyperConverged space with HyperFlex, a solution leveraging the software defined storage technology from SpringPath. I wrote about this announcement back then here – http://bit.ly/1ngMmb6 Some of the key figures announced today were that over 70PB of storage has been sold as part of this solution and there around 950 new customers enrolled to the HyperFlex offerings. As I covered in my launch post regarding HyperFlex, the differentiators being around the Integrated Network Fabric  for that one stop shop for Compute, Storage and also Networking. The ability to integrateRead More →

Here is the second part of the Living the Veeam Dream post and also the 10th post in the #ProjectTomorrow I hope everyone has found at least one post useful or will do in the time to come. The whole point of the series is really to summarise the last 6-12 months of my home lab and really give some insight on to why I have one and what I use it for on a day to day basis. If you have any burning questions or recommendations please reach out to me on twitter @MichaelCade1 I am always more than happy to have a chatRead More →

As I write out this post I am actually on a flight off to Berlin for the fourth time in 3 years, I am heading to the NetApp Insight event which will be the third year of it taking place here. The last time I was here was back in a cold February for Cisco Live, same conference centre so I am hoping for something a little different for this one. Thinking about it this will be the third time at NetApp insight Berlin and once again I am in a different role… the first time I was at Avnet delivering Pre and Post sales,Read More →

Last week I had the pleasure of attending NetApp Insight in Berlin, having been to this conference in this same city for the past 3 years and also once for a Cisco Live, I knew the lay of the land and my bearings. This however was the third Insight in Berlin and my third different role. This time I was over for the Technical Evangelist role. This gave a different steer to the attendance. I was able to attend a lot of good technical sessions some of which I plan to shake down in another post this week. It was also my debut session speakingRead More →

Day 9 – Post 9, I wrote this prior to knowing the outcome of the US presidential vote…. I stand by if Donald Trump at the time of publishing this is President then we are going to be in a world of pain as a world not just the US! EDIT – so the above happened and maybe there is a complete post on its own here to reflect on the news I woke up to this morning, but I am not as shocked as I thought I would be. Having spoken throughout my night to a lot of my American friends who seem fineRead More →

Welcome back and today’s post is really talking about one of my favourite features from VMware but also I want to touch on a little how Veeam can use Tags to protect your workloads.  The powerful world of tags and being able to assign this little tag to a virtual machine, datastore or pretty much all objects within the vSphere inventory. You may decide to tag virtual machines based on OS or possibly in order of importance, the old adage of Gold, Silver, Bronze and paper this coupled with other technologies that can consume this tag profiling can really help automate a lot more withinRead More →
