We have finally made it to the penultimate post from my HomeLab series #ProjectTomorrow I have split this one title into two parts because really this is the fundamental reason why today I even have a home lab. I have a fully functional demo side of things so I will dive into that and what and where the Veeam components are residing, I also have a test environment which really allows for me to test another instance of Veeam software and this is really there to be spun up and spun down with no real persistence. Obviously the virtualisation piece is key to the flagshipRead More →

Welcome back and we are now on the 3rd post of my #ProjectTomorrow series and also the 5th post of November meaning I am still there and on par with what I achieved last year in the #VDM30in30 which was a pretty shoddy performance. Happy Guy Fawkes / Fireworks night. Funny Story that Jack Cade was actually friends with Guy Fawkes back in the day, nothing to do with wanting to burn down parliament but went against the king on numerous occasions. A legend in himself and one of the reasons I wanted to call my first son Jack. Maybe another idea for a postRead More →

Following on from post 3 of the series I want to now outline the design I went for and some of the reasoning for this, the equipment I have has a lot of direct attached storage, but not a good enough RAID controller if a RAID controller at all. This led me to having individual disks as datastores. This method is clearly not very good for resiliency, if those disks die then I lose the contents… or have to revert to a backup at very least. This is not really an issue as I am running regular backups on the machines I need to haveRead More →

Welcome to Post 5, in this post I want to dive a little deeper into the Host Configuration, Physical Build and Networking configuration. The previous post has outlined the simple approach and where I place each of the physical nodes and even slightly touching on the nested hosts for demo purposes. This post also signifies the 7th post of the #VDM30in30 challenge that I am attempting and I am now at the stage where I have the ideas and titles in my head but its now about putting it down on paper and getting constructive useful posts out on the site for all to consume.Read More →

I wanted to kick off this series with a brief look into the Whys and What for, for the home lab,  it seems in my view anyway that the last few months has seen either a resurgence or just generally more interest around the industry for the Home Lab. This post is really an introduction and part of at least a 10 part series covering right from an introduction in where or why you might need or want a home lab to a deep dive into what I am doing with my own lab. I hope to cover off the “Why I am doing this”?Read More →

Following on from the 1st post, I want to touch on what I will be using my lab specifically for  and the reasons why, then later on in the series I will outline how I have achieved certain aspects and I am very much open for feedback over the whole design piece to make the most of this lab equipment. As I mentioned in the first post my lab usage will consist of Testing, Demo and some training. To set the scene here, I have recently started a new role at Veeam Software as a Technical Evanglist, prior to this I was a Systems EngineerRead More →

What is Ransomware? What is ransomware? – A type of malicious software (Malware) which restricts access to a computer and/or the files on a computer until a ransom amount is paid. It’s something that is downloaded via email or file from the internet or passed between users much the same as a virus, this can be linked to a virus, malware, Trojan horse these are the same thing but a more evolved version. What is it going to do to a single computer or network? – it’s going enforce restrictions through encryption and prohibit access to certain areas of a machine or an environmentRead More →

I want to run through such an easy thing to do but wanted to document it nonetheless. Setting a Group Policy to have a shiny new Veeam background on all your domain machines. (obliviously you don’t have to have the Veeam wallpapers) I as many of my visitors have their own home lab or are leveraging a public cloud for their lab purposes. I have just spent my Monday going through my home lab and have upgraded all my servers to Windows Server 2016 and I have also updated all my Veeam components to the latest version 9.5. When I rebuilt this lab a fewRead More →

I have seen many a post recently that dives into the IT professionals bag and divulges the secret travelling tech products or just the cant leave without amenities. I decided to jump on this and let you know what I carry around in my bag. The Bag I have a choice of two and this really depends where I am heading, if I am heading out for a conference I prefer a backpack, easier to march around airports and conference centres with a backpack but if I am rocking a suit or have a particular customer meeting then I would probably go for the messengerRead More →

Another year done here at vZilla and I would say a very successful one. Besides all the political melting pot either side of the Atlantic and the horrendous year for celebrity deaths. I personally have had a pretty good year. I started the year as a Systems Engineer with Veeam where I had started in the March of 2015. Kicking the year off with Cisco Live which was in Berlin and then heading over for the Annual ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) NetApp A Team symposium over in Sunnyvale. That’s when things started to change I have detailed the start and finish of that transitionRead More →
