“NetApp ONTAP Select is the software-defined version of ONTAP deployed on customers’ choice of commodity servers and hypervisors.”  First, I must introduce NetApp ONTAP Select a Software Defined Storage play allowing for ONTAP to be leveraged on commodity hardware and not requiring FAS hardware. Before Select, NetApp had released a product called ONTAP Edge a similar use case but limited to VMware.   Edge was great for me from a test and development point of view, I didn’t have the power or budget to be able to run a full blown FAS in my home lab, so Edge gave me that possibility rather than relying onRead More →

Today Veeam made generally available 4 new updates for 4 of the major components of the Veeam Availability Platform. Veeam Availability Suite that consists of both Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam ONE both have their 9.5 update 3 update that I will touch on further down in the post. The agents for both Windows and Linux also get an update release. This shortly after the GA of the Veeam Availability Console release a couple of weeks back. Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 3 Touted as the “biggest release” in Veeam’s history, and it’s just an update release, Built-In Agent Management The much anticipatedRead More →

I kept a keen eye on AWS re:invent last week from afar, the event was held in Las Vegas and I have seen attendee totals of up to 45,000 that’s and incredible amount of people heading over there. Personally I am really interested in AWS, they seem to have a really exciting cadence on features and product release. I really like the fact that the mammoth amount of announcements they made most of them are available straight away. This is a new thing in our industry normally we have to wait months before we actually see the functionality. I am also really impressed with theRead More →

This morning on the final day of NetApp Insight 2017 in Las Vegas, it was announced in the General Session that Veeam would be added to the NetApp global price list. Here is the executive blog from Veeam – https://www.veeam.com/executive-blog/direct-integration-with-netapp-ontap.html From my point of view being a bit of a NetApp fanboi this is pretty special, we have some pretty deep integration with NetApp ONTAP systems today already but now to bundle Veeam licensing with any ONTAP solution and allowing NetApp sales and partners to easily order this bundle from one location. It’s not just about that integration though, we still have some other stickyRead More →

What’s great about the E2800? A good while ago now I put a post together about some great target storage repositories these included Cloud Integrated Storage, The Cisco C Class range which now the S3260 is a great “Appliance” one stop shop for compute and high density storage and the post regarding a SAN backup appliance. Each have their own use cases and rights and maybe if you are interested we can have a discussion on those use cases and where you would see one over the other etc. I am talking about the blog post I put together regarding the NetApp E2700 or inRead More →

Announced at the end of August at VMworld in Las Vegas was VMware on AWS, nothing new here as this was spoken about a year ago, but things are now moving towards being available. From the small bit of exposure, I have seen it really does look like they have done a great job in making things seamless between an on premises vSphere deployment and the new vSphere offering on AWS. Let’s firstly look at what VMC looks like. What do you get if you want to spin this up? Minimum 4 ESXi Hosts 36 Cores, 512GB RAM 8x2TB NVMe SSD for vSAN HA, vMotion,Read More →

The guys over at the NetApp TechONTAP podcast, Invited me back for another slot on their show. I was over in Raleigh, North Carolina specifically visiting the Research Triangle Park and NetApp for a week of NetApp A Team ETL goodness, It’s where we get to provide feedback as well as learn of what’s ahead from a NetApp point of view. The podcast “studio” is based at their campus there, when I say studio I actually mean Storage cupboard…. But how good is that? A Storage vendor podcast or should I say Data Management company hosting their podcast from the storage cupboard. Oh the irony.Read More →
