What is FastSCP ?

FastSCP is the simplest and fastest way to deliver ISO files to ESX Servers or copy VMs and templates between ESX Servers. FastSCP ensures security by using a one-time password feature and works more than six times faster than SCP.

What is Microsoft Azure ?

Microsoft Azure (formerly Windows Azure before 25 March 2014) is a cloud computing platform and infrastructure, created by Microsoft, for building, deploying and managing applications and services through a global network of Microsoft-managed datacenters.

The Problem

There are many problems or issues currently associated with how we can bring back data from the public cloud and send it back up again if required. All of which currently are quite time consuming to complete.

Currently if you want to be able to upload data to and from Microsoft Azure you will require a VPN connection and a copy will either take place over an RDP connection or you will have to attach the data to a VHD

Without VPN , the only way to get data into an azure VM is via RDP ( slow – has 2GB file limit )  or via uploading and attaching a VHD ( complex)

For example if you are running a SQL instance in Microsoft Azure and you would like your developers to access this data On-Premises to perform code changes then this can be a timely download for starters. Another example could possibly be for developers that require an upload a numerous occasions throughout the working day and rather than having to make sure the VPN is in place and having to create disks, upload etc then the following solution would help save a lot of time and effort.

The Solution – Veeam FastSCP for Microsoft Azure Beta

Free, Secure file copy for Azure Virtual Machines

Much the same as Veeam FastSCP worked back in the day for us moving files between ESX servers and downloading to our local machines for small edits etc.

Veeam FastSCP for Microsoft Azure Beta allows you to simply and reliably copy local files to Azure Virtual Machines and vice versa without the need of setting up VPN tunnels between your On-Premises and Azure platforms.

It will allow a secure file copy with no independent encryption required.

This process can be on a scheduled or manual process, allowing for test and development teams to have the most up to date database or files to work on without having to go and download on demand and wait for the download to complete before work can commence.

  • Not blob storage.
  • Only Azure VMs
  • Doesn’t require VPN
  • Encryption is built into the product
  • Manual file copies as well as scheduling
